MARCOS ENGINEERING ANNOUNCES ALLIANCE WITH
PRODRIVE
Expanded Operations, Test Track and Chassis Improvements for Marcos
NEC, Birmingham, UK, 25th May, 2004 - Marcos Engineering Ltd ("Marcos")
is pleased to announce that it has entered into a strategic alliance with
Prodrive. The agreement will see Marcos expand operations into Prodrive's
Warwickshire location and the development of new chassis technology for
its roadcars.
Prodrive (www.prodrive.com) is one of the world's leading motorsport
and automotive groups with global operations turnover in excess of £110
million and an employee base of nearly 900 in the UK, North America, Germany,
Thailand and Australia. Prodrive is the world's largest independent motorsport
business with involvement in various international race and rally series.
Currently, Prodrive runs the Subaru World Rally Team in the World Rally
Championship; the Ferrari 550 GTS programme in the Le Mans 24 hours and
American Le Mans Series; Ford Performance Racing in the Australian V8
Supercar series; as well as managing the BAR Formula One Team. They currently
have six World Rally titles and five British Touring Car Championships
to their name.
Through these extensive programs, Prodrive's engineering group has become
a recognised leader in chassis dynamics and next generation active vehicle
dynamic systems and powertrains. Marcos and Prodrive are working together
to deliver a structurally advanced chassis and suspension for the new
Marcos TSO. This involves collaboration on chassis design, analysis and
testing, along with vehicle dynamics testing at Prodrive's test track
in Warwickshire.
"We are excited to be working with Marcos on-site and on the new
TSO", said Andy Tempest, Managing Director of Automotive Technology
at Prodrive. "Chassis dynamics at these performance levels are critical
and I believe we have the expertise to collectively deliver an impressive
roadcar."
In addition, Marcos Engineering will be expanding operations into their
own new 6,000 square foot facility at Prodrives Kenilworth site in Warwickshire.
This facility provides a 1.5 mile high performance circuit and one of
the few split low grip surfaces in the UK capable of simulating driving
under slippery road conditions.
"We are delighted to align with Prodrive," said Tony Stelliga,
Chairman of Marcos Engineering, "Their engineering team is world
class and having access to that team, a modern development facility and
test track is an ideal situation for us at Marcos Engineering".
Marcos' new TSO will be the first vehicle to benefit from this alliance.
The TSO is a high performance, lightweight V8 sportscar that delivers
up to 400 HP under current specification. It is on display this week at
the Sunday Times Motor Show at the NEC in Birmingham.
CHRYSLER CROSSFIRE ROADSTER HITS THE STREETS THIS SUMMER
Less than a year after launching the Crossfire coupe, Chrysler is bringing
an open-top Crossfire Roadster to the UK.
The new convertible combines stunning good looks with a powerful 3.2-litre
V6 engine, a powered fabric roof and super-stiff bodyshell, all for £27,995.
The Roadster shares the Coupe's stunning rear view with a tapered, "boat
tail" appearance that emphasises the car's 19" rear wheels plus
a retractable spoiler that activates when the car reaches 60 mph.
To achieve an even more dynamic appearance, the Roadster features satin
silver painted sport bars that appear just behind the driver and passenger
seats. Two race-inspired fairings integrated into the top of the tonneau
cover complete the dynamic appearance of the sports car.
The new 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Roadster features a 3.2-litre 90-degree
V-6, 18-valve SOHC engine, and reaches a top speed of 150 mph and 0-62
mph in 6.5 seconds.
The Roadster is available with a six-speed manual gearbox at £27,995
or a five-speed automatic transmission for £29,235. ESP, cruise
control, leather upholstery and air conditioning all come as standard.
To retain its sports car ride and handling, the Chrysler Crossfire Roadster's
bodyshell has been engineered for its new role as a convertible to ensure
the maximum retention of torsional rigidity and structural integrity.
With this additional strengthening the Crossfire Roadster weighs just
36 kg (80 lbs) more than the coupe.
"The new Chrysler Crossfire Roadster is an absolutely stunning car
and captures the spirit of the Crossfire coupe," said Simon Elliott,
Managing Director for Chrysler Group in the UK. "The Roadster, with
its great looks and performance - top up or down - will present a formidable
challenge to its competitors in one of most hotly contested convertible
segments in the world.
For open-air motoring, the top goes down in 22 seconds. The driver simply
has to pull down the centre-mounted handle on the windscreen header and
turn the handle - which releases the convertible fabric top and lowers
the side windows. Press the button on the centre console, and the Chrysler
Crossfire Roadster's fully automatic powered roof system then takes control,
opening the hard tonneau cover, folding away the fabric top, and closing
the tonneau cover. When the top is down, no trace of the fabric top remains.
In the UK, Chrysler Crossfire Roadster customers will benefit from a
peace-of-mind package which includes a comprehensive warranty and European
roadside assistance package for three years/60,000 plus seven years' unlimited
mileage anti-corrosion guarantee.
The Crossfire Roadster is available in UK Chrysler dealers from mid-June.
WORLD PREMIERE FOR NEW VOLVO S60, V70 AND
XC70 AT MOTOR SHOW
As well as a host of detail interior enhancements and exterior design
refreshments, the new Volvo S60, V70 and XC70 making their debut at The
Sunday Times Motor Show Live, also offer significant safety, convenience,
performance and dynamic improvements, including:
* T5 engine performance upgrade
* 2nd Generation Four-C Active Chassis - with Comfort and Sport settings
* BLIS (Blind Spot Information System)
* WRG - Water Repellent Glass
* Passenger airbag cut-off switch
* Service intervals extended to 18,000 miles for 5-cylinder petrol engines
Brief highlights of the detail updates to the exterior styling include:
* New bumpers, alloy wheels, 'soft nose' and front grille designs
* Increased model differentiation, eg. S60 and V70 SE models now have
full body coloured bumpers, side and door mouldings, plus chrome bumper
inserts
* New-look front and rear lights with clear lenses
While interior quality enhancements include:
* New design for centre dashboard, audio units and integrated phone, surrounded
by more extensive improved aluminium or walnut wood trim
* New, superior centre tunnel console and multi-function arm rest design
* New generation Volvo front seats, with new Sovereign Hide upholstery
available
* Improved trim for doors, A-pillars and dashboard materials for less
reflection
Power and Torque Increased for T5
The T5 engine available in the S60 and V70 is significantly upgraded with
dual variable valve timing on both inlet and exhaust sides as well as
a larger capacity turbocharger. The engine also increases in size from
2.3 to 2.4-litres and tuned to give sportier throttle characteristics
and engine response with better low-end torque and improved emissions
without increasing fuel consumption figures.
Headline power has increased from 250bhp to 260bhp with torque of 350Nm
instead of 330Nm, but more significantly, revised tuning now delivers
this power at lower engine speeds. For example, from just 1,800rpm torque
has increased by 65Nm to 280Nm, with peak torque of 350Nm from 2,100rpm
(instead of 2,400rpm previously).
Performance for the S60 T5 improves with 0-62mph times reducing from
6.8 to 6.5 seconds, while emissions reduce slightly to 220g/km. Front
disc brakes and callipers have increased in size to also improve braking
performance, with a new, six-speed manual gearbox with a revised aluminium
'Space Ball' gear lever now available in the V70 as well as the S60, or
Volvo's Geartronic transmission.
2nd Generation Four-C Active Chassis
Volvo's active Four-C chassis (Computer Controlled Chassis Concept) has
been refined and now introduced as an option for the new 2005 S60, V70
and XC70 ranges.
The active Four-C chassis system provides fully active damping with two
distinct operating ranges - Comfort and Sport - to give a pronounced difference
in ride, handling and steering characteristics with different settings
for S60 (more sporting), V70 (more touring comfort) and XC70 (tuned for
off-road and on-road).
The Comfort setting gives higher levels of comfort but with low body movement,
while in Sport the ride becomes firmer with a higher level of road feel
and feedback. The system will automatically adjust to stabilise the car
during any extreme manoeuvres, no matter which setting is selected, and
compensates for heavy loads for improved stability at all speeds and when
towing.
Driving characteristics for the S60 R and V70 R models have also been
improved with Comfort and Sport settings better tuned for UK road surfaces
using higher damping speeds to handle bigger road disturbances, while
the Comfort setting is improved with maintained road feel and body control.
Full details of the R models will be released in summer 2004.
Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
Previewed in the Volvo Safety Concept Car in 2001 with a refined version
revealed as one of Volvo's safety technology innovations at the Detroit
Auto Show in January 2004, Volvo is now introducing BLIS for the first
time on production cars - a world first in passenger cars.
BLIS operates when the car's travelling above 6mph (10km/h), and uses
digital camera technology mounted in the door mirrors to monitor surrounding
traffic, taking 25 pictures a second to register when another vehicle
is moving within the car's blind-spot zone - within 3m of each side of
and up to 9.5m behind the car.
An amber light on the A-pillar by the door mirror inside the car warns
the driver if BLIS detects other traffic. The warning lamp is triangular,
to represent a warning symbol, and positioned so it can be seen easily
as the driver checks mirrors before any manoeuvre.
It is programmed to work day or night, but not to react to static objects
such as parked cars, and a warning message alerts the driver if the system
cannot function in poor visibility like heavy fog or snow. A button on
the dashboard enables the system to be turned off, if desired.
Water Repellent Glass (WRG)
New water repellent glass is now available for S60, V70 and XC70 side
windows and door mirrors. To improve visibility when driving in rain,
a hydrophobic surface treatment on the front side windows turns water
into small beads which the airflow will blow away, leaving the window
clear. A small symbol on the glass illustrates the car is fitted with
WRG.
Passenger Airbag Cut-Off Switch
For added customer convenience, a Passenger Airbag Cut-Off Switch is introduced
for the first time in a Volvo. This is controlled by using the ignition
key in a switch on the side of the dashboard, and illustrated by a warning
symbol above the rear view mirror.
Extended Service Intervals
Service intervals for all S60, V70 and XC70 5-cylinder petrol engines
have been increased from 12,000 to 18,000 miles (or one year whichever
comes first).
SCHOOLGIRLS YOUNGEST EVER CHELSEA MEDAL WINNERS WITH "THE DAIHATSU
GREEN GARDEN"
A group of schoolgirls from south west London today (25 May) became the
youngest ever designers to win a medal for a main show garden at the world
famous Chelsea Flower Show.
Pupils from Burntwood School for girls, in Wandsworth, were awarded a
silver medal by RHS judges for "The Daihatsu Green Garden".
Four lead pupils, Zoe Harrison, Alex Hosking and Sian and Kamala Johal,
were also presented to the Queen during her official visit on the eve
of the show.
The garden is the result of Daihatsu's nationwide competition for secondary
schools to design a biodiversity Chelsea Show garden.
As a founding corporate patron to the RHS, Daihatsu is committed to helping
drive home the message that more could be done to encourage wildlife into
Britain's domestic gardens.
Managing Director, Andrew Edmiston, said: "Just as our cars are
greener than most without sacrificing levels of performance or equipment,
our silver medal winning garden proves that a wildlife garden can be just
as innovative and exciting as a piece of 'high design architecture'."
School Project leader, teacher Eleanor Smith said: "To be at Chelsea
in the first place is simply incredible, but to win a medal is beyond
all expectations. We are so proud of our girls."

MARCOS ENGINEERING ANNOUNCES THE NEW "TSO"
SPORTSCAR - Expressive new Style and Unprecedented Price/Performance in
a new 2 seater
BIRMINGHAM, UK, 25th May, 2004 - Marcos Engineering Ltd ("Marcos")
is pleased to announce the new Marcos TSO roadcar - making its debut at
the Sunday Times Motorshow at the National Exhibition Centre In Birmingham.
This two seat open top sports car delivers an unprecedented level of power,
precision and style in the company's 45-year sportscar history.
From the outset, the new management and engineering team at Marcos set
out to build a reliable, easily drivable two-seater, yet instil the TSO
with many of the attributes found in Marcos racing cars. This has yielded
a road car with exceptional performance and agility while also being comfortable
in daily driving and at home in any environment.
The resulting "TSO" or "Omologato" is derived from
its racing blood line and as such delivers an awe inspiring 400 horsepower
in a two seat roadcar that weighs just 1090kg. These impressive power
to weight figures enable it to accelerate to 60 mph in just 4 seconds
and to 100mph in just 9 seconds. Top speed is estimated to be over 185
mph.
Power is provided by a 5.7 Litre V8 Engine derived from the same GM powerplant
used in Marcos and Corvette racing cars worldwide. This Aluminium Alloy
block and head design is extremely reliable and lightweight. The TSO R/T
benefits from intake and valve train enhancements to increase useable
horsepower without sacrificing drivability or fuel economy.
The TSO provides driving agility and impressive road holding due to extensive
chassis development and testing under a partnership with Prodrive - a
recognised leader in chassis dynamics, vehicle dynamic systems and powertrains.
Currently, Prodrive has six World Rally titles and five British Touring
Car Championships to their name.
The design team was driven to capture some lines from the 45-year winning
history of the brand, yet take the design forward in precision, quality
and style. Designed by Damian McTaggart, formerly the designer of TVR's
Cerbera, Tuscan and T350, the TSO's lines are exceptionally clean yet
aggressive. The design effort coupled classic sculpting techniques for
real-time feedback with state of the art CAD techniques for precision
and speed.
The entry level TSO is priced at £39,950 and delivers 350HP with
a 5-speed transmission and 17 inch wheels. The TSO R/T is priced at £44,950
and produces 400HP with a 6-speed transmission, sports suspension package
and18 inch rear wheels.
"The TSO marks the return of the sharp, affordable, high performance
V8 British sports car ", said Tony Stelliga, Chairman of Marcos Engineering."
We believe it hits a gap in the marketplace that stirs the soul of motoring
enthusiasts and are thrilled with the result".
Marcos Engineering is also pleased to announce it will be expanding operations
into their own new 6,000 square foot facility at Prodrive's Kenilworth
site in Warwickshire. This facility provides a 1.5 mile high performance
circuit and one of the few split low grip surfaces in the UK capable of
simulating driving under slippery road conditions.
The TSO is on display this week at the Sunday Times Motor Show at the
National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Further information is available

FOUR NEW MODELS FOR BRITISH SHOW
* Biggest-ever British Motor Show presence for Ferrari and Maserati marques
* UK debut for sensational Ferrari 612 Scaglietti and 575M Maranello with
Handling GTC pack
* UK debut for new Maserati Quattroporte and GranSport
25 May 2004 - Four new Ferrari and Maserati models will make their UK
public debut at The Sunday Times Motor Show Live on Tuesday 25 May at
Birmingham's NEC. British motoring enthusiasts will have their first opportunity
to see the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti and 575M Maranello with Handling GTC
pack, the Maserati Quattroporte and the latest Maserati GranSport.
Both brands will share the 550m2 Stand 120, in Hall 6, with separate
zones alongside a special Formula 1 feature from the multiple-world championship
winning Ferrari team. A grand total of
10 Ferrari and Maserati road cars will be displayed.
While Scuderia Ferrari continues to be the dominant team in F1, the Ferrari
Maserati Group's road car business goes from strength to strength after
significant investment during 2003, both in new models and new manufacturing
facilities in Italy.
This year, Ferrari and Maserati have opened new showrooms in Moscow and
Shanghai, taking the number of dealers worldwide to more than 200, operating
in 50 countries around the globe.
Ferrari
The all-new, all-aluminium 612 Scaglietti four-seater Ferrari raises the
art of grand touring to a new level of sophistication. Longer, wider and
taller than the 456M it replaces, the 612 Scaglietti offers ease-of-entry
for rear-seat passengers to an outstandingly luxurious cabin that will
accommodate four adults in absolute comfort. Powered by Ferrari's most
advanced V-12 engine, the 612 Scaglietti, shown at the NEC in Blu Mirabeau
has a top speed of 199 mph and for the first time on a Ferrari, computerised
electronic stability and traction control (CST).
Derived from the marque's FIA-GT racecar, the V12-powered 575M Maranello
with Handling GTC pack finished in Rosso Corsa paintwork features track-developed
components for an even more thrilling driving experience. For the first
time on a front-engined Ferrari, this model has Brembo carbon-ceramic
brake discs and a further evolution of the Fiorano handling package -
special springs and anti-roll bars, lowered ride height, upgraded power
steering and enhanced electronic suspension control. It also features
a sports exhaust system, newly designed exhaust pipes, and modular 19"
wheels fitted with special Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres (255/35 ZR19 front
and 305/30 ZR 19 rear).
The Ferrari zone will also exhibit a Challenge Stradale in Nuovo Nero
Daytona and a Rosso Corsa 575M Maranello with a Crema and Bordeaux interior.
Scuderia Ferrari
Despite the best efforts of numerous potential rivals, the Scuderia Ferrari
Marlboro team continues to set the pace and demonstrate the reliability
that others can only aspire to. Michael Schumacher's title-winning F1
car will take pride of place at the NEC. Ferrari has won the F1 Constructors'
world title for a record five years in a row while Schumacher's 2003 drivers'
crown was his fourth in succession with the Prancing Horse.
Maserati
A luxurious sporting saloon with the heart of a sportscar, the Maserati
Quattroporte is already on sale in the UK. It delivers sensational, refined
performance with an on-the-road price of £69,995 including a three-year
'peace of mind' service package. The award-winning V8-powered four-door
saloon has a uniquely balanced weight distribution (47 per cent front
- 53 per cent rear) and responsive handling that cannot be beaten in this
class. The Quattroporte showcar is finished in Blu Sebring, but no two
cars need to be the same as customers can choose from a host of exterior
and interior colours.
The Maserati Lifestyle Service is now available to all Quattroporte owners.
A dedicated consultant is available 24/7 (by phone, fax or e-mail) to
provide a tailor made service, bringing Italian style to customers worldwide.
The finest Italian products, including clothes, perfumes, wines and foods
are just a phone call away.
Owners will also be able to book tickets, make hotel and travel reservations
and receive information on various subjects, including currency exchange
rates, passports and visas, weather forecasts, art exhibitions, concerts,
sporting events and fashion shows.
The new GranSport is the latest addition to the Maserati range. It's
a sportier, edgier alternative to the Coupé and offers more power
and even sharper handling in a model focused on delivering the highest
performance. The Blu Mediterraneo GranSport at the NEC looks especially
purposeful with its deep front spoiler, airflow-controlling side sills,
discreet bootlid spoiler lip, chrome grille, lowered ride height and larger,
19" Trofeo racing-style alloy wheels.
In addition to these, two Coupé Cambiocorsa models and a Spyder
GT will be displayed, finished in Blu Nettuno, Grigio Touring and Grigio
Nuvolari.
Autocar announces 'Automotive Rich List'
and not a woman in sight
Autocar Magazine reveals the biggest players in the automotive industry
in their Motor Show edition.
The Autocar list celebrates Britain's influence by identifying the 100
most powerful players across the automotive globe. Their contribution
will be clear to see at the International Birmingham Motor Show which
opens to the public on Friday 28th May through to Sunday 6th June 2004.
