MY2002 - Year 2002 New Age Impreza

If you are in the USA and are looking for details on the US specification MY2002 that was released in March 2001, please visit the MY2001 page. This page is dedicated to the MY2002 which was released in Autumn 2001 in Japan, Australia and Europe.

Diffrences from MY2001

For the UK it was difficult to see where the car could develope. With the STi now officially making it into the UK the only real change with the MY2002 was the introduction of a windscreen mounted in car radio antenna rather than the A pillar mounted item.

Another signitifcant change was the introduction of 12 monthly/10,000 mile service schedules rather than the 6 month/7,500 schedules previously seen. This was also retrospectively given to the MY2001. Note that this was a UK regional change and many other markets remain at the original intervals.

Australia has seen an interesting development with an auto box WRX released as standard, and a revised set of ratios in the manual gear box. Final reduction gear ratio is now 4.444 compared to 3.9. with changes also to 1st, 2nd, 3rd. It will be interesting to see if this change is carried over to the UK because Nick Senior, General Manager, Subaru Australia, said: "It is part of our plan to move vehicles in the Australian market away from technical aspects more suited to the autobahns of Europe, which don't reflect our everyday conditions."
Gear ratio MY02 Impreza WRX MY01 Impreza WRX

3rd 1.296 1.366

5th 0.738 0.738

STi to Europe, Australia and USA?

A letter from Subaru USA has been sent out to people enquiring of the STi in the USA. This unfortunately says that the STi will not be seen in the near future as the market for the standard WRX is being explored first with 2004 being the most likely earliest date.

Grey import STi version 7 were already available here in the UK, but official import of the car was rumored for sometime, even at the time of launch of the New Age in August 2000. The real good news for Europe and Australia was that the car finally made it in 2002 and more information can be found on the STi UK pages.

September 2002 the new MY2003 mid-life face lift is shown at the Paris motorshow. The reaction is extremely good and as a result to quickly reduce existing MY2002 stocks Subaru UK announce that there will be an up to £3000 discount available on the MY2002 models. This brought the WRX turbo price down to £18,999.

Press Release - MASSIVE IMPREZA RUN-OUT INCENTIVE - UP TO £3,000 OFF

Subaru has announced a massive price incentive for its current Impreza models with on-the-road reductions of up to £3,000 for the Impreza WRX Sports Wagon.

Effective immediately and covering vehicles registered by 31 December, 2002, the savings affect every model in the All-Wheel-Drive Impreza range and are available through participating Subaru dealers.

The initiative is to allow an orderly clearance of stock prior to the introduction of the facelifted Impreza which goes on sale in February 2003.

This special offer means the entry-level Subaru Impreza 1.6 TS Sports Wagon is now £12,495 on-the-road - a saving of £1,455.

Other spectacular run-out deals include either an Impreza WRX Saloon or Sports Wagon for £18,995 OTR - savings of £2,500 and £3,000 respectively.

"This action is partly being taken as a result of the tremendously positive reception the facelifted Impreza received at the Paris Motor Show," said Managing Director, Sam Burton.

He added: "While the new version will bring genuine improvements, many people who thought Subaru ownership was beyond their reach now have a golden opportunity to buy the current Impreza and discover why Subarus enjoy such a loyal following."

In addition, all special-offer Imprezas qualify for Subaru's comprehensive three year or 60,000 mileage warranty plus three years' paintwork and six years' anti-corrosion cover. Also standard is three years' membership of Subaru Assistance - a comprehensive home and roadside repair and recovery package throughout the UK and Europe.
